Britain on alert: Experts warn Russian cyber attacks are a matter of when, not if

Britain is already facing a hidden cyber war as Russian-backed hackers target critical systems, security experts have warned.

The Australian Signals Directorate (ASD) has issued a warning that hostile cyber groups are focusing on key infrastructure including energy networks, communications, financial services and defence organisations.

Experts say the danger is no longer a question of if a major cyber attack will happen โ€” but when.

โ€œIt’s not a case of if. It’s a case of when,โ€ warned Lincoln Goldsmith, director of digital security firm Semperis.

โ€œYou almost have to assume your security has already been breached.โ€

Cyber analysts believe Russia is targeting Western nations, including members of the Five Eyes intelligence alliance โ€” Britain, the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand โ€” as part of a wider geopolitical campaign.

The threat extends beyond governments and large companies. Hospitals, local councils, supermarkets and even homes could become targets.

Recent cyber incidents have shown the real-world consequences. Hackers previously attempted to compromise a Florida water treatment facility, while major businesses have faced attacks that disrupted operations and supply chains.

Security experts are increasingly concerned about the rise of internet-connected devices, warning that smart TVs, routers, voice assistants and household gadgets can create new entry points for criminals.

A weak password, outdated software or an old router could provide the opening hackers need.

Officials are urging households and businesses to update devices, strengthen security and take cyber threats seriously.

The battlefield of the future may not be fought with tanks and missiles.

It could begin with a computer screen going dark.
