China Electronic Technology Cyber Security Co Ltd, working in the aviation and aerospace industry, has applied for the most cybersecurity patents since 2000, applying for a total of 135 – an average of 6 a year.

Honeywell, in the engineering industry, is second for filing for the most patent applications, with a total of 114 submitted since the millennium

Two of the companies in the top 10 are based within the aviation and aerospace industry – in the aftermath of COVID, it’s been reported that the industry is facing a wave of cyber-attacks, with airlines being targeted in a huge 61% of all 2020 cyber attacks in the industry.

François Amigorena, CEO at IS Decisions suggests that the need for innovation will never cease, saying, “The need for innovation will never go away as cyber threats will continue to evolve, but it is exciting to see the immense investment in and progress towards ever-more sophisticated prevention methods to mitigate risk.

“The amount of patent filings for DoS and DDoS prevention methods isn’t surprising as we saw a huge amount of preoccupation around these types of attacks and their prevention methods in some of our other recent research.

“IT leaders can rest a little easier knowing that there is so much interest in advancing cyber threat prevention methods to keep pace with new threats and help reduce risks.”
