One of the hottest announcements that hit the mic on Gamescom this month was that Indiana Jones and the Great Circle would be released on the PS5 in the Spring of next year.

Notably, the Indiana Jones game has been highly anticipated by fans and gamers alike, which is why the decision not to boost console sales through exclusivity has been questioned just as much.

Hence, Phil Spencer, the Chief Executive Officer of Microsoft Gaming, has come out to address such concerns.

Key Takeaway:

  • Indiana Jones is a highly-anticipated video game title that is set to release in December this year on the Xbox Series X|S and PC.
  • However, during Gamescom this month, it was announced that the game would be later ported to the PS5 in Spring.
  • Microsoftโ€™s decision was questioned by many, with more and more supposedly exclusive games being ported over to PlayStation, diminishing confidence in the console.
  • The port came off as all the more concerning with the gap between Xbox and PlayStation widening, potentially portraying Microsoft as desperate for high sales.
  • Phil Spencer explained the decision as a positive decision that prioritizes the sales of their franchises (by bringing them to as many players as possible) over their consoles.

Intrigued by the news, Syed Arham, an author at TheSolitaire.com, stated, โ€œI think everyone viewing this discussion should take in some very important context. PlayStation has long since beaten Xbox in the console race. More and more people are choosing the PS5 as their go-to next-generation console, and hence, Xbox is starting to lose its relevance. With that said, there is some level of desperation running rampant over at Microsoft headquarters.โ€

โ€œOn top of that, this isnโ€™t the first time Xbox-exclusive games have come over to PS5, likely as a last-ditch effort to garner more sales. While Iโ€™m glad Iโ€™ll get to play Indiana Jones on my PS5, whatever little remains of the Xbox player base will definitely lose confidence in their favourite console. Through many decisions like these, such players will definitely reconsider Xbox when the next console race happens in the following decade.โ€œ he adds.

During a Gamescom broadcast, Phil Spencer attempted to address and explain the reasons why Indiana Jones suddenly set its sights on PlayStation as well: โ€œWe run a business. Itโ€™s definitely true that inside Microsoft, the bar is high for us in terms of the delivery we have to give back to the company. Because we get a level of support from the company thatโ€™s just amazing and what weโ€™re able to do. I look at this: how can we make our games as strong as possible? Our platform continues to grow on console, on PC, and on cloud. I think itโ€™s just going to be a strategy that works for us.โ€

“The last thing Iโ€™ll say is that as an industry right now, thereโ€™s a lot of pressure on the industry. Itโ€™s been growing for a long time, and now people are looking for ways to grow.

“As fans and players of games, we just have to anticipate thereโ€™s going to be more change in how some of the traditional ways that games were built and distributed, thatโ€™s going to change. Thatโ€™s going to change for all of us. But the end result has to be better games that more people can play. If weโ€™re not focused on that, I think weโ€™re focused on the wrong things. So for us as Xbox, the health of Xbox, the health of our platform, and our growing games are the most important things,โ€ he concluded.

Indiana Jones is set to release in December 2024 on Xbox X|S and PC, with a PS5 port planned for Spring in the following year.
