Uber launches supervised autonomous rides in London as Wayve brings self-driving cars to capital

Londoners will be able to hail a self-driving vehicle through Uber from Thursday, marking the first commercial rollout of supervised autonomous rides in the capital as the technology moves from testing towards wider deployment.

Passengers booking an UberX, Uber Electric or Uber Comfort may be matched with a Wayve autonomous vehicle at no additional cost.

British artificial intelligence company Wayve has partnered with Uber to operate an initial fleet of all-electric Ford Mustang Mach-E vehicles equipped with its AI Driver system and dozens of sensors.

The vehicles can operate across London, with the exception of airports, and passengers can accept the autonomous journey or switch to a conventional vehicle before the car arrives.

The service will continue to operate through the existing Uber app and booking process. The initial rollout will involve a small number of cars, with the fleet expected to expand as demand grows and the regulatory framework develops.

Sarfraz Maredia, global head of autonomous mobility at Uber, said: โ€œWe’re delighted to bring autonomous rides to Uber riders in London for the very first time, powered by Wayve, a homegrown British success story.

โ€œLondon is a world-class hub for transportation innovation and this launch is a major milestone in scaling safe, accessible AV technology in a city with some of the worldโ€™s most complex roads.โ€

The deployment represents an important commercial test for Wayve, which has developed and trained its autonomous driving technology on Londonโ€™s roads since 2018.

Its โ€œAV2.0โ€ approach is based on an AI Driver that learns and improves through experience in complex driving environments, rather than relying solely on pre-programmed responses.

Alex Kendall, Wayveโ€™s chief executive and co-founder, said he was โ€œproudโ€ to launch the technology in the companyโ€™s home city and โ€œone of the most complex driving environments in the worldโ€.

โ€œAutonomous driving technology will complement the city’s rich transport network, and we’re excited for Londoners to experience it first as we begin our global rollout with Uber,โ€ Kendall said.

Uber is seeking to expand its autonomous mobility business internationally, with Wayve-powered vehicles expected to operate in 12 markets worldwide, beginning with London.

The two companies also plan to introduce the Nissan Leaf to the Wayve-powered fleet in Tokyo later this year.

For Uber, autonomous vehicles offer the prospect of reducing reliance on human drivers over the longer term while expanding the capacity and potentially lowering the operating costs of its ride-hailing network.

For Wayve, the London launch provides an opportunity to demonstrate its technology at commercial scale in one of the most complicated urban driving environments in Europe.

The government has also backed the rollout as evidence of Britain’s ambitions in artificial intelligence and advanced transport technology.

Transport secretary Heidi Alexander described the launch as a โ€œmajor milestone for the future of transport in Londonโ€.

She said the technology could support investment and the development of new skills, allowing the sector to expand significantly.

Business secretary Jonathan Reynolds said: โ€œFrom today, people will be able to step into the technology of the future as autonomous vehicles are rolled out on the streets of London, and that is a hugely exciting milestone for the UK.

โ€œThese autonomous vehicles use homegrown, British AI from Wayve, once again showing that we have the ability to be a genuine world leader in the AI transformation.โ€

The rollout comes as governments and technology companies across the world compete to establish regulatory frameworks and commercial models for autonomous vehicles.

London presents a particularly demanding environment, combining dense traffic, pedestrians, cyclists, complex road layouts and rapidly changing conditions.

The ability of autonomous vehicles to operate safely and reliably in those circumstances will be closely watched as the service expands.

The supervised nature of the initial service also means the rollout represents a transitional stage rather than full driverless deployment, with the technology being introduced alongside conventional transport options.

For passengers, the immediate change is relatively simple: an autonomous car can now arrive through the same Uber booking process at no extra cost.

For Britain’s technology industry, however, the launch represents a more significant test of whether domestic AI companies can convert years of research and investment into commercially viable services that can be deployed at scale.
