Autumn Budget: Tech and workforce expert weighs in

While the Chancellor has announced measures aimed at supporting SMEs, fully funded apprenticeships, and regional investment in emerging tech hubs – as well as targeted cost-of-living support and a minimum wage uplift – questions remain about whether the Budget goes far enough to tackle the bigger challenges facing the UK workforce.

From frozen tax thresholds putting pressure on take-home pay, to changes in ISA allowances and pension salary-sacrifice rules, the long-term drivers of growth, innovation, and technology adoption are not being fully addressed.

Ollieย Whiting, CEO, La Fosse Associates, said,ย โ€œThis budget delivers a mix of welcome measures and missed opportunities. On the positive side, fully funded apprenticeships for SMEs are a smart move – investing in skills at the start of someoneโ€™s career is exactly what the tech sector needs to widen access to entry-level roles.

The increase in the minimum wage and targeted cost-of-living support will also give lower-paid workers some breathing space after a tough few years. Regional investment in emerging tech hubs is also encouraging, and shows a commitment to spreading opportunity across the UK.

That being said, the budget stops short on addressing some of the bigger challenges being faced by employers. Freezing tax thresholds puts more pressure on take-home pay and on employers already navigating rising wage expectations. Changes to ISA allowances and limiting pension salary-sacrifice raise questions about how seriously saving, investment, and productivity are being incentivised, too.

Most importantly, it doesnโ€™t fully tackle the drivers of long-term growth: innovation, business investment, and technology adoption. Without bold action in these areas, we risk managing symptoms rather than solving the structural issues affecting productivity and employment.

Overall, itโ€™s a steady budget, but the tech sector, and the UK workforce more broadly, needs something far more transformative to truly support growth and opportunity.โ€
